History
Abrademi was formally created on February 3rd, 1984 as non-profit cultural-association, according to Brazilian law requirements. The union of Japanese culture researchers from USP - University of São Paulo and Brazilian professional artists and designers was the association's origins. Abrademi’s founders are Prof. Dr. Sonia Maria Bibe Luyten (manga researcher and author of "Manga – The Power of Japanese Comics", former professor of the University of São Paulo and Osaka University), Mrs. Mitsuko Kawai (Japanese / Portuguese translator and Japanese literature and popular tales researcher), artist Roberto Kussumoto (comics and illustration artist, nowadays living in Japan and working for the Chunichi Shinbum) and journalist Noriyuki Sato (Japanese culture and manga researcher, author of "History of Japan in Manga" and "The Samurai’s Ethics on Economic Management").
In October, 1984, Abrademi began it’s activities with the Japan Foundation’s support, promoting Brazil’s first manga exhibit at the Masp – Museum of Art of São Paulo, and a special event and meeting with manga artist late Mr. Osamu Tezuka.

In 1986, Abrademi represented Brazil at the Osaka International Manga Fair taking to Japan some works of Brazilian most famous artist. Prof. Sonia Luyten Abrademi’s representative, was a event’s special guest and was invited to make a speech during the opening presentation.
Abrademi is a completely independent legal civil entity, without any relation with publishing companies, religion organizations or schools. Since it’s creation, Abrademi has been promoting manga, illustration, modeling, animation and paper works classes, Japanese popular culture events, social actives at orphanages and schools, meetings and debates about manga, anime and Japanese post – war culture matters. Since 1996 Abrademi promotes once a year an international manga contest for amateur artists (Abrademi Contest) and Brazil’s only manga and anime national convention (Mangacon).
Abrademi’s main office is in the city of São Paulo / SP. There are also other Abrademi’s unit, in the city of Rio de Janeiro / RJ.

  • Purpose
    Abrademi’s main purpose is the Japanese post – war popular culture disclosure, what includes manga and anime phenomenon.
    Abrademi’s members and associates are volunteers who like and agree to work in a typical Japanese associative system (kaikan). The association is supported by the members’ collective work. No fees are paid by members and associates to join the association.
    Abrademi is not a fan – club, does not sell unauthorized video copies, does not publish unauthorized Japanese manga and does not sell images of any kind. If you just want to get that kind of material, please access the specialized manga and anime companies’ sites.

    Abrademi publish a quarterly informative bulletin, in Portuguese, for free distribution to 2200 associates in Brazil.
    News, interviews and information about manga and anime can be read in Portuguese on the page "Manga & Cia." , weekly published in "Notícias do Japão" newspaper, Brazil’s biggest Japanese community newspaper. These same articles are eventually published in Portuguese and Spanish in "International Press" newspaper, exclusively in Japan.
    In the future, all information on this site will be available also in Spanish, French and Japanese, For now only some items are translated into those languages, although the entire site is already available in Portuguese and English. We ask your comprehension.
